When did China first start colonizing Taiwan?

Well, not exactly "colonize", but in the 17th century, many Han Chinese immigrated there from mainland China. Another wave of Han Chinese immigration was in 1949 after the Nationalists lost the civil war. Today more than 9 out of 10 Taiwanese are ethnically Han Chinese.
