Bird behavior - what makes a group of pigeons/birds suddenly take off in the air?

Even when there's no disturbance/danger (eg. someone scaring them away), I have still seen them suddenly take off together out of the blue. It's amazing how they all do it in tandem. How are they communicating in a matter of split seconds. Would love to learn bird behavior.
